This two-day figure painting workshop is a unique opportunity for students of all levels to learn the process of painting the nude figure using a full palette. We will utilize warm and cool lighting to achieve dynamic colors, giving a contemporary feeling to portraits painted with traditional techniques. The course will center on the experience of painting from a live model and there will be a single, sustained pose throughout the workshop. Participants will learn how to achieve a better likeness as well as how to paint convincing flesh tones. Each day will include a painting demonstration, discussion and individual instruction at the easel. Discussions and handouts will cover the stages for developing a painting, anatomical proportion, structure of the face and features, as well as value, edges and modeling with color temperature. The beginner will learn fundamental principles such as how to mix colors and render form modeling. The more advanced student will discover how to take their work to the next level and achieve the finish that they desire.
This online class will guide students of all levels through the creation of a well-structured alla prima portrait painting with convincing hair. We will explore the use of different brushes, sanding, scraping and glazing to mimic the effects of hair using paint. There will be a discussion on how to mix different hair colors, (such as blonde, red, black, grey and brown hair) as well as a concentration how to create convincing hair textures. Participants can use any medium they like in this course. I will be doing the demo in oils and will provide a suggested supplies list for those interested in using oils. By the end of the course students will have a solid understanding of how convey the texture of hair using paint as well as an understanding of how to mix colors to portray the different shades of hair.
In this three hour online class I will take you through the stages to developing a portrait painting in oils using photographic reference. You will learn how to select a good photo to work from, how to tone your canvas before you begin and how to use oil paints so that they’re fun and easy. I’ll start by walking you through measuring techniques that will ensure that you get accurate proportions and a good structure to your portrait as you block in your underpainting.
